Hey Undergrads!

TLDR: Sign this petition<https://tiny.cc/mitgrades> to add grade transparency regulations to faculty governance laws: 1) Have a drop-date flag for all undergraduates, 2) Contextualize grades for major assignments in all classes and 3) Ensure faculty members justify students' grades to them during the semester.

Grade transparency has been a serious student concern for decades and profoundly affects equity within higher education at MIT. Allowing students to know where they stand in their classes, where they may be going wrong, and how they can improve their performance is crucial to the learning process. Now more than ever, good grades are a necessity for many post-graduate opportunities, whether it be graduate school or employment in any industry. Additionally, failing a course (besides being incredibly stressful), can have disastrous implications, as it might result in needing to pay for an additional semester, delaying one's employment and potentially not graduating on time.

For too long, MIT's faculty governance laws have failed to protect grade transparency, often resulting in students' inability to have conversations with their professors about grades/performance. In presenting these proposed regulations to the Institute, we want to take a crucial first step in protecting MIT students, their mental health, and their future opportunities. The voices of the MIT student body are incredibly powerful, and in signing this petition, you will be adding your name to a movement that aims to constructively change our learning environment for the better!

Sincerely,
Ben Wolz
