COVID Focus Groups

Tl;dr We’re looking for undergrads to talk about your experiences during COVID and your thoughts on spring planning. If you are interested, please sign up using this form <https://forms.gle/L9Bg8EdFk8Qi8b8F6>.

Hello undergrads,

The UA Committee on COVID-19 is planning to conduct a series of focus groups to better understand the student experience this semester. Both on-campus and off-campus students are invited to participate.

The goal of the focus groups is to understand what worked, and what did not work (emotionally, physically, academically, etc), for you this semester. Please participate if you want to voice your opinion and ideas on MIT’s COVID-19 response! In the past, UA COVID has used student input to advocate for programs like pods, a more personalized SHARP process, better dining, and many other initiatives to improve student life. These focus groups will allow us to gain a clearer picture of your perspectives so that we can better advocate for you on the administrative level.

MIT Sloan is participating in a collaborative effort to foster a diverse pool of talented applicants in research assistantship programs across the country. The goal is to foster diversity in PhD programs in Economics and Business, and eventually, faculty. This is PREDOC: Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers (https://predoc.org <https://predoc.org/>).

PREDOC is a consortium of academic and research institutions whose mission is to foster a talented and diverse population of researchers in the quantitative social sciences, with a particular focus on predoctoral programs in economics departments and business schools. These institutions include Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Northwestern, NYU, Princeton, Stanford, UT Austin, Yale, the NBER, and the Federal Reserve system.

The website predoc.org <https://predoc.org/> will act as a one-stop place where undergraduate students from any backgrounds can find all the information they need, including available predoctoral job positions around the country, educational material to prepare, and so on.

We are planning an informational session at noon on either the 1st or 3rd of December. Please indicate when you could attend (PREDOC Information Session <https://mit.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6mzZWl0VWp2ZNS5>).

Student Support Services (S^3) Info Session from FLI @ MIT
When: Tuesday, 11/17 from 4-5 PM ET
Join the session: Zoom link <https://mit.zoom.us/j/93321548321>

We at FLI at MIT are reaching out to you to let you know about a helpful opportunity to learn more about Student Support Services (S^3) and the resources that they can provide to you, such as extensions for exams and projects.

With the end of the semester approaching soon, we understand that there can be many academic concerns that you all have. Therefore, we are hosting a “Campus Partners Hour” session on Tuesday, November 17th from 4pm - 5pm EST on Zoom with S^3. Miri Skolnik, Assistant Dean of S^3, will be in attendance (along with a few students) to provide information, answer questions, and discuss how to utilize the resources that S^3 has to offer. We encourage any student who is interested to come.

If you have any questions regarding this session, please send an email to us at fli-exec at mit.edu <mailto:fli-exec at mit.edu>. Additionally, if you do identify as a first generation and/or low-income (FLI) student and would like to join FLI at MIT’s listserv, feel free to reach out.

FLI at MIT is MIT’s recently formed coalition for first generation and/or low-income undergraduate students, composed of MIT’s QuestBridge Chapter, First Generation Program (FGP), and student organization Class Awareness Support and Equality (CASE).

Food Insecurity
Roughly 11% of MIT students say they go to bed hungry at least 1 night out of 7because they don’t have enough money for food. No student should go hungry and no student should feel like they need to be “really hungry” to ask for help. Student Support Services is writing to simply let you know about resources to help, many for both on-campus and off-campus students. Please visit the websites below, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you are hungry due to lack of resources. No problem is too small.
