To the MIT undergraduate community,


As many of you may have heard, MIT has recently dismissed a proposal to make Election Day a holiday this year. This proposal was championed by the diligent and well-intentioned efforts of certain faculty members, student groups, and prominent campus voices. We, as students, have been deprived of a fundamental choice. A choice between our education and having a say in the future of the country. This deprival is a tremendous loss to those who recognize the virtue of participation when it comes to the health and sanctity of our democracy. This election is not the time for doublespeak or line-stradling.


We, as students, are taking this into our own hands by urging the faculty and department heads to make classes on Election Day asynchronous, freeing students to participate in the democratic process and to fulfill an obligations that they may have--whether it be voting, transporting others to the polls, working the polls, watching the polls for a campaign, or doing GOTV programming.


Despite not being affiliated with MIT, students across the Boston area<https://drive.google.com/file/d/10ThN5phL9NndJh1NujzfQSRmJGQl0N2Y/view?usp=sharing> (and their respective institutions) have taken a lead<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m-glB4y9_fi32bA3_C2-FKK86iLvRKF2/view?usp=sharing> on ensuring that we, as MIT students, won't be forced to sacrifice academic engagement for civic engagement. It's on us to support these efforts from across the river. The importance of this election cannot be understated. The importance of our participation cannot be understated. And it's crucial that we encourage our institution to reckon with this consequential reality.
