Hi Undergrads,

Welcome to MIT 2024s, we are so glad to have you! Hope you all had a great first week at MIT!

To those back on campus, we hope you’re having a safe Q-Week and want to thank you for your commitment to the health of our community. To students everywhere, we hope you are finding community and engagement despite the largely virtual MIT experience this year.

The Byte is a weekly UA newsletter to inform undergraduates about what's happening in the MIT community.

The Byte is run by the UA which works to improve your undergraduate experience through policy, projects, and events. We're always happy to listen to your suggestions, concerns, and comments. Learn more at ua.mit.edu <http://ua.mit.edu/>.

Curious about getting involved with your government at the state & city level?
Want to make an impact in your local community?

Join Engineers & Scientists Acting Locally <http://www.esal.us/> and the Ecological Society of America <https://www.esa.org/> for a Civic Engagement webinar.

While federal policy and politics tends to dominate the national headlines, the importance of policy-making and implementation at the state and local government level often gets overlooked. Recent events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and discussions of racial justice and police reform, have highlighted the critical role of city, county and state governments. In this webinar, Engineers and Scientists Acting Locally (ESAL) will discuss the ways in which scientists can engage with local government, and use their expertise and inquiry driven, evidence-based approaches to inform policy decisions. We will highlight examples of scientists who have made substantive contributions to their communities, often without a major career shift. This workshop is intended for scientists at all stages of their careers, including students. We hope that attendees will leave inspired with new ideas for how they can get more involved in their own communities.

Hellooooooo MIT!

Founded in 1994, DanceTroupe is one of the largest dance organizations at MIT. We share a wide variety of dance styles at ALL skill levels, so everyone can feel at home here no matter your experience level. This organization is entirely student run, and every member has the opportunity to both dance and create choreography for their fellow students!
In past years, a semester of dance would culminate in an epic series of performances at the end of semester. However, to accommodate everyone being spread across the country due to COVID-19, this coming Fall we’ll be shaking things up a bit. This semester, DT members can look forward to weekly dance workshops and regular social events to hangout with other members of the MIT dance community through Zoom. And if you wanna get a taste of the thrill of performing, we will also be hosting more intensive two-week choreography lessons where members can get feedback and submit a video of themselves dancing which we will splice into an a w e s o m e final video. No auditions are required to participate; everyone is welcome! We look forward to seeing you this semester!
