Hello undergrads!
This has been a whirlwind of a week. Though this Fall is nothing like we could’ve ever expected, there is much to do and shape.
Academic Policy Discussion Forum
The UA Committee on COVID-19 will be holding an Academic Policy Forum this Monday. The Committee will be preparing a report to the Academic Policy and Regulations Team (APART), recommending academic support measures to be widely adopted in Fall 2020 to improve the remote learning experience. As professors are redesigning their classes for Fall 2020 to best adapt to remote learning, this discussion will be to gain direct student input to inform our report recommendations. Join us on Monday (7/20), 7.30-9PM ET on Zoom<https://mit.zoom.us/j/92882537204>.
Following the grading decision announcement yesterday, Kelvin Green II, the undergraduate representative to APART, will also be joining us, sharing how undergraduate input was taken into the grading policy deliberations.
Given the grading policy, there will need to be new academic support measures, and we invite you to this forum primarily to brainstorm with us and to gauge your central concerns and thoughts. This will be an open discussion to come up with solutions for problems related to remote learning, including, but not limited to, accessibility of student support (accommodating office hours, S^3, tutoring service), the honor code, and technological issues (Wifi, Hotspot, VPN, furniture).
If you want to express your opinion but cannot attend the forum, you can provide anonymous feedback to the UA Committee on COVID-19 Feedback form<http://ua.mit.edu/covid19-feedback> or email the UA COVID-19 academic subcommittee directly at ua-covid-academic at mit.edu<mailto:ua-covid-academic at mit.edu>.
Summer Resident Housing Policy Discussion
On Monday (7/20), 6:30-7:30PM ET, the UA will be holding a community conversation for students who have lived in emergency housing, whether in the Spring or the Summer, to discuss housing policy on Zoom<https://mit.zoom.us/j/95053492729>. Judy Robinson and Tessa McLain from the Division of Student Life, will also be in attendance to answer any questions and to participate in the conversation. They are primarily tasked with determining the housing policies for the Fall and want to hear your experiences to help them shape the remaining policies.
Currently, some policies<http://iz1w.mjt.lu/lnk/ATwAAEx2FPkAAAAAAAAAAAARjugAAVWsymMAAAAAAAhvEABfEj-18XpJlr5SSN-DXYDlMd9_HQAIBDM/10/Ij41_MkSPUK4fFY0EFNd3g/aHR0cDovL3N0dWRlbnRsaWZlLm1pdC5lZHUvY292aWQxOXBvbGljaWVz> have already been developed for the Fall, but a few remain under review and soliciting input, including the guest policy, indoor common areas, and special kitchen use. As summer residents, you all bring a perspective that is incredibly valuable, as you are the only ones that know what it is like to live under some of these policies. By attending this discussion, you will help shape the policy for the over 1000 MIT students coming this Fall.
UA Committee Chair Applications
UA Committee Chair applications<https://mit.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0cb9f68f0bc51d0385e5d8872&id=fe0db7ae63&e=b65712b0ab> close tomorrow, (7/19). As the UA becomes increasingly policy and advocacy-oriented, we are looking for student leaders to spearhead this transition within the issues they're most passionate about. Take advantage of this unique moment in history: transform student government and drive long-lasting policy change across the many different sectors of student life. A list of committees that are looking for either a chair or co-chair is here<https://mit.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0cb9f68f0bc51d0385e5d8872&id=ca26010aac&e=b65712b0ab>. Interviews will be held this coming week.
As always, if you have any questions at all, please reach out! We love to hear from you.
Take care,
Yu Jing
