The Association of Student Activities is recruiting new members!
What is the ASA?
The ASA is the governing board that handles the administrative aspects of MIT’s over 400 student groups. This includes recognizing and de-recognizing groups, handling space allocations, organizing the twice-yearly Midway club fair, and allocating LEF and ARCADE funds. We represent student voices in coordinating with the Student Activities Office (SAO) and the Campus Activities Complex (CAC) to advocate for student groups’ needs and enhance the student experience at MIT.
What positions are open?
All positions are being actively recruited for, including Secretary, Treasurer, and all subcommittee positions. A description of each position’s responsibilities are listed in the next section. Each position will meet once a week for one hour to discuss their committee’s roles, unless otherwise stated. One person may not hold more than one office unless discussed and approved by the ASA Executive Board.
Where can I apply?
The ASA is hosting their general body meeting on April 2nd at 6:00 PM in 32-123. Next year’s ASA executive board will be elected during this meeting, so please attend if you are interested in any position on the board!
Please contact asa-exec at mit.edu<mailto:asa-exec at mit.edu> if you have any questions about these positions or the recruitment process.

What are the responsibilities for these positions?
The ASA Secretary is responsible for attending every ASA Executive Board meeting and recording minutes, as well as sending out ASA Officials and coordinating responses to general email questions directed at the ASA board.
The Funding Committee is overseen by the ASA Treasurer and composed of the ASA Treasurer, an undergraduate representative and a graduate representative, as well as the GSC Treasurer and Finboard Chair. The Committee oversees the Large Event Fund and the Assisting Recurring Cultural and Diversity Events (ARCADE) Fund, deciding allocations for each on a semester basis. The Committee works together to allocate available funds to student groups to support events outlined in each fund's guidelines and ratifies proposed allocations by a vote. The proposals of the Committee are then presented to the entire ASA Executive Board for ratification. Throughout the funding cycle, members of the Committee are available via email to answer questions from student groups and at the end of the cycle review the spending of funded events. The Undergraduate Representative and Graduate Representative to the Committee on Events Funding provide an student perspectives in the decision process for the LEF and ARCADE funding decisions. They are not required to attend ASA Executive Board meetings, but have voting power if they wish to attend.
The Groups Committee is overseen by the ASA Groups Chair and is composed of the ASA Groups Chair, one undergraduate representative, and one graduate representative. The Committee oversees group recognition in the fall and spring, responding to groups that need further clarification before a decision is made. The Committee votes on how to proceed with each group, and proposed approvals or rejections are presented to the ASA Executive Board for ratification. The Committee is responsible for the process of group re-recognition in the spring, tracking which groups have or have not completed the process, and communicating with the SAO about the status of suspended or derecognized groups. The Committee also coordinates the fall Midway and CPW Midway, handling the applications for and organization of those events, with the final plan presented to and approved by the ASA Executive Board. The Undergraduate Representative and Graduate Representative to the Groups Committee provide student perspectives on group approval and aid in handling the process of re-recognition. They are not required to attend ASA Executive Board meetings, but have voting power if they wish to attend.
The Space Committee is overseen by the ASA Space Chair and comprised of the ASA Space Chair, a graduate student representative and an undergraduate student representative. The Committee is responsible for planning and overseeing the fall ASA space and poster allocation process and provides a recommended set of student group space assignments for approval by the ASA Executive Board. The Committee is tasked with studying the use of student group space managed by the ASA, seeking opportunities to expand the spaces available to students and student groups. The Committee is further responsible for handling all space-related questions posed to the ASA by student groups, and for resolving conflicts between space sharing groups or over postering violations with the support of the SAO. The student representatives will be available to assist groups in coordinating maintenance and access issues with the CAC, and to remain up to date on current issues affecting student group spaces at large. The Undergraduate Representative and Graduate Representative to the Space Committee provide student perspectives on space allocations and institute-wide student group space policies. They are not required to attend ASA Executive Board meetings, but have voting power if they wish to attend.
