SwipeShare: Donate guest meal swipes to students in need

TL;DR: If you are on a meal plan, donate guest meal swipes to a pool that is available for students in need here<https://mycard.mit.edu/student/local_donate.php>. If you are a student facing food insecurity, please visit an S3 dean in 5-104 to receive donated meal swipes.

Dear Undergraduates,

Did you know that according to the CASE survey, 11% of your peers could not afford food at some point during their time here at MIT? No student should have to deal with the anxiety that comes with not knowing where their next meal comes from on top of everything else we have going on.

To combat this program, in collaboration with DSL, today we’re excited to launch SwipeShare- a program that will allow students on meal plans to donate guest meal swipes to a pool that is available to students in need. Donated guest swipes from this semester will carry over into the spring term, so if you don’t plan on using yours before the end of the year please consider sharing them with a student who might otherwise be hungry.

Making a SwipeShare donation is easy. Click this link<http://studentlife.mit.edu/swipeshare/> (certificate required) and you can see how many guest swipes you have remaining. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and as many guest swipes as you want to donate will be added to the pool.

If you know of someone who needs help, please have them visit an S3 dean in 5-104. Graduate students can reach out to Dean Naomi Carton at naomic at mit.edu<mailto:naomic at mit.edu>. They will provide quick and discreet assistance.

As we head into the holidays, please remember that anyone on a meal plan can help another student who may be struggling. We are working with DSL, CASE, and other groups on how to address food insecurity more broadly and permanently, but SwipeShare is a first positive step in the right direction.
