*TL;DR:** Find out about support for low income students, fill out the
Undergraduate Cost of Living Survey (search "Undergraduate Cost of Living
Survey" in your inbox), and read the CASE socioeconomic report results
attached.*
Hello everyone!
On September 25th, the student group Class Awareness, Support and Equality
(CASE) released a report (attached here) detailing the results of a survey
on socioeconomic issues that students face on campus. The report, which was
subsequently detailed in The Tech here
<https://thetech.com/2017/10/12/case-survey-results>, validated need for
stronger support systems for students that are struggling financially at
MIT.
Since then, we have met with VP of Student Life Suzy Nelson and Dean David
Randall to discuss what the Institute is currently doing to address some of
these concerns, as well as potential next steps. MIT currently has an
emergency fund to help cover the costs of food, winter clothing, school
supplies, emergency flights back home, among other costs. Undergraduates
can email s3-associatedeans at mit.edu for more information.
Further solutions that are currently in the works include a food insecurity
working group headed by Dean Randall, and a coalition of students, staff,
and faculty that would ensure that all students have the support they need
at MIT.
Recently, the Undergraduate Cost of Living Survey was released. This
survey, conducted every three years, is used as the basis to decide how
financial aid packages are assembled. *It is therefore important that you
fill out the survey, so that the financial aid package can be as reflective
of actual student living expenses as possible. The link is user-specific,
so it could not be linked to here. To fill out the survey, search your
inbox for "Undergraduate Cost of Living Survey" and click on the link in
the email. The deadline to fill it out is next Monday, October 23rd.*
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at case-exec at mit.edu.
Cheers,
René and CASE Exec
