Hello Undergraduates,
Welcome back from your weekends!
The UA Public Affairs Committee is holding an event with Representative
Livingstone, Sunday, April 24 from 12pm-1pm in PDR 3 (W20-303). Come have
lunch with your local state representative and learn about how politics
really works from someone who lives it! Free pizza and lunch will be
provided. Seating is limited, so please RSVP to ua-pac-chair at mit.edu if
you'd like to come. A PDF is attached!

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Alexander
Sludds (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):
*"This week we are going to talk about something that isn't directly
related to MIT, but does help give context to events that were going during
the First World War. The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 is an urban legend in
Boston with many people claiming it did not occur. This event took the
lives of 21 people and injured 150. A large quantity of the Molasses was
used to create ethanol which was a key ingredient in munitions. Since the
demographics of that area around the ~2 million gallon tank was shifting to
be mostly Italian-American there was concern that someone might damage the
tank in protest of US involvement in the war. *
*Later reports on the structure of the tank by former MIT professor George
F Swain (who was talked about before) indicate that the tank was damaged by
an external source."*
