Hello Undergraduates,
I hope you're all excited for CPW this weekend!! (Perhaps the snow will
melt by then??) Enjoy what may (hopefully...) be your last chance to build
a snowman!
----
*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Alexander
Sludds (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):
*"This week we will be looking into one of the most prominent architects
around campus and indeed the world: Eero Saarinen. Saarinen is most famous
for the design of the St. Louis Arch. On campus Saarinen designed the MIT
Chapel and Kresge Auditorium. For the MIT Chapel Saarinen had a vision: To
create an island of tranquility for students. That is why the moat exists
around the chapel. He also purposefully put in the design that the bricks
should jut out so as to create a textured effect. There are no exterior
windows on the chapel, only windows above the moat. The reason for this is
so that when sunlight shines on the moat it will get reflected up into the
chapel itself and create natural light patterns along the walls.Kresge
Auditorium was designed so that there would be no structs or columns
obscuring view. To accomplish this Saarinen designed the building such that
almost all of the load is supported by the three points where the roof
intersects the ground."*
