Hello Undergraduates,

I hope you're excited about welcoming the class of 2020 today, and that
you're hanging in there--we're almost at spring break! You've done so much
to get to this point, and you should be proud of it!

----

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Alexander
Sludds (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

*"This week we are going to concern ourselves with something that a lot of
old civil engineers might remember, camp technology. For the sake of
brevity I will let this following video explain to you the need and culture
behind camp technology:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRtOGgQHZkY
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRtOGgQHZkY>Camp Technology was an idea
that original came from MIT professor George F. Swain. Swain was passionate
about MIT and in 1900 wrote a 9174 word essay in Popular Science Monthly
praising the infrastructure and vision of the institute. It would come as a
surprise to everyone when Swain left the institute in 1909 to join the
newly formed Harvard Graduate School of Applied Science. Even more
interesting is that Swain wrote to President Maclaurin in 1914 telling him
that his recent attempts at a merger with Harvard were of great benefit to
the institute."*
