UA Committee on Sustainability presents:

*Dorm Electricity Competition Rules*

Monetary prizes will be awarded to:
*1)* the dorm that *reduces electricity usage the most* during the month of
March*
*2)* the dorm/FSLIG that *earns the most spirit points*

Win *individual raffles prizes* by earning spirit points!

1) Electricity Saving Competition

How are the electricity measurements done?

   -

Electricity measurements are taken by manually reading the electricity
meters in the dorms and taking the difference from week to week.
   -

Weekly electricity savings will be calculated for each dorm by taking
the percent change in electricity usage compared to a weekly baseline value.
   -

Reporting percent change corrects for the variation in energy usage
across dorms, which is due to a variety of factors including the size of
the dorm, the energy-efficiency of the building, and the presence/absence
   of a dining hall.
   -

These baseline values for each dorm were calculated by averaging data
from Sept, Oct, Nov, and Feb 2016.

Who can compete?

   - All of the dorms!

*2) Spirit Point Competition*
What are spirit points?

   -

Spirit points are a way for you to show that you're being sustainable
and making an effort outside of the hard numbers we get from the
   electricity meters.
   -

We keep track of how many spirit points you earn from February 29 to
March 30, and your total will contribute to your dorm/FSILG's spirit point
total, as well as increase your chances of winning a raffle prize.

Who can compete?

   -

Any undergrad who lives in a dorm or FSILG can earn points for their
residence. So if you are a member of an FSILG, but live in a different
residence, your points will go to the residence where you live, not the
   FSILG.
   -

The spirit point score for each living group will be per capita.

How do I earn spirit points?

   -

Attend DEC Events: You will receive 5 spirit points for every DEC
sponsored event <http://dec.mit.edu/#events> that you attend.
   -

*Submit a proposal:* Have an idea on how to make your dorm more
sustainable? Email a description of your idea to
ua-sustainability-dec at mit.edu and we'll award you 5-10 points based on
the content and level of detail. If your idea is feasible and well thought
out, it may be implemented in the winning dorm!
   -

Write a blog post: If you write a blog post related to sustainability
and submit it to us here <http://dec.mit.edu/#submit_blog>, then you
will be awarded 5-10 spirit points depending on the length and content.
Some examples of topics you could write about are why sustainability
matters to you and sustainability in your daily life. Really, though, any
topic is great as long as it's related to sustainability! Personal
anecdotes, opinion pieces, poems - send them all!
   -

Take a picture and upload to our website
<http://dec.mit.edu/#submit_blog>: Send us a picture of yourself doing
something sustainable, and we'll award you 1-5 points depending on the
level of sustainability and creativity! (For example, spending a day at a
Charles River cleanup would earn a 5.) All pictures will be posted on this
site. Examples of things we've received in the past are:
   -

      Taking the stairs
      -

      Filling a reusable water bottle
      -

      Composting
      -

      Planting something in your room
      -

Bringing a reusable bag to the store
      -

      Picking up litter
