Hello Undergraduates,

*Reminder that online pre-registration for IAP and spring semester begins
tomorrow! (The deadline is December 30th.)*

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair,
Allan Sadun
(ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

*"The Fall 1997 death of Scott Kreuger
<http://tech.mit.edu/V117/N46/alcohol.46n.html> is best-known among the
undergraduate student body for leading to President Vest's declaration of
the freshmen-on-campus policy. But among faculty, it was a wake-up call in
general: "Something's wrong with MIT student life". The 1997-1998 academic
year saw a lot of faculty writing about the MIT student experience -
about the freshman year <http://tech.mit.edu/V117/N59/royden.59c.html>,
about learning <http://mit.edu/fnl/vol/103/breslow.html>, about the
freshmen-on-campus policy <http://mit.edu/fnl/vol/111/bailyn.html>, and, in
characteristically self-referential fashion, about the relative absence of
faculty in student life <http://mit.edu/fnl/vol/103/hildebdl.html>. In
fact, the faculty passed a "sense of the faculty" motion
<http://mit.edu/fnl/vol/103/newmotin.html> at a faculty meeting in November
1997, building on the sentiments of the Task Force on Student Life and
Learning <http://web.mit.edu/committees/sll/>. ("Living and learning" was a
big phrase in those years, and a major component of the philosophy behind
Simmons Hall.)*

*It's arguable, but it's been said that we haven't had such intensity of
faculty interest in MIT student life since 1998."*
