Hello Undergraduates,

Drop date is this Wednesday!

The UA Marketing Committee has been hard at work in designing a new logo
for the UA, as well as producing *a video to accompany The Byte.*
<https://vimeo.com/145871418>Give it a look! Alberto Hernandez, the
Marketing chair, wants to add this quote from an email by the co-chair of
the Black Students' Union Political Action Committee (PAC) Co-Chair,
Rasheed Auguste, "*Monday and Tuesday (November 16 and November 17) this
week, members of the PAC will be in the BSU Lounge in Walker Memorial
(50-105) from 7-9PM for two sets of 'office hours', where students can come
together and share their experiences and make suggestions about what
specific issues should be addressed in said recommendation list. You can
also email us your thoughts at bsu-pac at mit.edu."*
*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Allan
Sadun (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

*"Change at MIT (when done properly) happens slowly, carefully, and with
broad consensus. In December 2003, shortly before being replaced by
President Hockfield, President Vest publicly charged a Task Force on the
Undergraduate Educational Commons
<http://web.mit.edu/committees/edcommons/index.html> with defining the
goals of an undergraduate education at MIT, and coming up with suggestions
for improving the "common core" - the GIRs. The committee deliberated for
three years, having forum
<http://tech.mit.edu/V124/N8/038GIRhearing.8n.html> and panel
<http://tech.mit.edu/V125/N11/11_gir_panel.11n.html> and meeting
<http://tech.mit.edu/V125/N57/57housing.html> after meeting
<http://tech.mit.edu/V126/N48/48townhall.html> and considering all kinds of
ideas, before finally issuing a nearly-200-page report in fall 2006, the
main push of which was to make the GIRs more flexible, interdisciplinary,
and related to society at large.*

*The report was hotly debated by the faculty - here's a spring 2007 issue
of the faculty newsletter devoted only to this topic
<http://web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/194/> - and it took until February 2009 for
a concrete proposal to finally be voted on at a faculty meeting. It "passed
<http://tech.mit.edu/V129/N2/girchanges.html>" 81-69 largely along school
lines; but because aspects of the plan needed a three-fifths majority,
the plan was scrapped <http://tech.mit.edu/V129/N6/girs.html> and the GIRs
remain the way they are today.*

*You can become more plugged-in to faculty affairs by adding yourself to
the newsletter announcements list
<http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/fnl-announce> and the faculty
meetings announcement list
<http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/facmtgs>!"*
