Hello Undergraduates,

Welcome to November 2nd! You know what that means... happy Cookie Monster
Day!

*Interesting piece of history of the week *from our UA History Chair, Allan
Sadun (ua-history at mit.edu; add yourself to the
ua-history-interest at mit.edu mailing
list here <https://groups.mit.edu/webmoira/list/ua-history-interest> if
you'd like to receive more):

*"In spring 2003, the FSILG system was reeling from the recent
implementation of the freshmen-on-campus policy (including a disastrous
experiment with having Rush in October). Cracks were showing, trust was
disappearing, and many believed the system was in danger. President Vest
asked Steve Immerman (was in DSL; now president of Montserrat College of
Art) and Prof. Patrick Henry Winston '65 (in EECS) to co-chair a Task Force
on Building the Future of FSILGs. Comprised of 15 people, mostly alums and
students, this Task Force spent a year meeting with students,
administrators, alumni, and others before writing their final report
<http://people.csail.mit.edu/phw/fsilg/final.pdf>.*

*Despite the amount of work they put in, they declined to consider major
changes to the freshman year, understanding that it would overwhelm their
committee and that such changes would have many "unintended consequences".
(You can read their brief talk of such changes on pages 14 and 15.)
Instead, they looked for ways to strengthen the system as it was, and the
MIT administration was highly receptive - implementing some of their
suggestions even before they finalized the report! In addition to reading
the full report <http://people.csail.mit.edu/phw/fsilg/final.pdf>, you can
read a summary <http://studentlife.mit.edu/aurora/summary> of their report
and a number of other related links
<http://studentlife.mit.edu/content/project-aurora> on DSL's website."*
