Dear undergraduates,
The Undergraduate Association's Committee on Student Support and Mental
Health <https://ua.mit.edu/people/committees/#student-support-wellness> would
like to invite you to participate in our focus
groups<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QtVOEprJ6xAsDQHSM0tapI_Y_JAfx_APywnS9oRDRvg/viewform>
on
sexual misconduct, Title IX, and hazing on campus. We want to learn how you
experience and handle these issues in your communities, and present those
insights to shape administrative action.
Chancellor Barnhart has been asked to assess the problem of sexual assault
at MIT and deliver a report to President Reif by the end of this year. Our
committee has been working closely with the Chancellor, Sarah Rankin, and
others to coordinate and support each other's research, and has advocated
for a dedicated undergraduate section in the Chancellor's report.
Furthermore, the Division of Student Life is developing hazing education
and prevention campaigns. We are working to have undergraduate concerns on
hazing reflected in DSL's educational objectives.
With the administrative work on these issues, we hope you will help us
convey your interests by joining our focus groups, where free meals will be
served. Our groups on sexual misconduct and Title IX will explore
student/administrative governance, enforcement of relevant statutes, and
perceptions surrounding related issues. Our hazing focus groups will cover
hazing's prevalence, the aspects that are most troublesome, and how
education and prevention can address hazing.
If you are interested in joining a focus group, please fill out this
sign-up sheet<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QtVOEprJ6xAsDQHSM0tapI_Y_JAfx_APywnS9oRDRvg/viewform>
by
Thursday, April 3rd, with your preference of which focus groups you would
like to join. Selected participants will be contacted shortly thereafter,
and we will hold focus groups throughout April. In addition, you are always
welcome to email ua-wellness at mit.edu with questions or ideas.
Thank you in advance for your participation and commitment to student life.
We hope to bring your ideas and thoughts forward into action.
Sincerely,
Emad Taliep
Chair, UA Student Support and Mental Health Committee
