Dear Undergraduates,

The Undergraduate Association, in partnership with Professors Steven Hall
and Chris Kaiser, invites you to participate in an MIT student forum on
questions raised by the report "MIT and the Prosecution of Aaron
Swartz<http://swartz-report.mit.edu/>."
The forum will take place on Monday, February 24th from 6:30-7:30 pm in
room 6-120.

In his letter accompanying the release of the report, President Reif wrote:
"I believe the report's larger questions deserve the collective wisdom of
the MIT community.... Because these questions bear so directly on the
expertise, interests and values of the people of MIT, I believe we should
explore them, respectfully debate our differences and translate our
learning into constructive action."

The community engagement process began in September with a website that
allows members of the MIT community to offer their thoughts on the eight
questions <http://swartz-review.mit.edu/> presented in the report, and
continued through the fall with outreach around campus. In December,
Professors Hall and Kaiser launched a series of discussions with different
segments of the MIT community.

Among the questions the forum will consider are:

- What lessons can we draw for MIT's hacker culture from the Aaron Swartz
case?

- Should an MIT education address the personal ethics and legal
obligations of technology empowerment?

- What are the moral, ethical, and legal challenges that face MIT and the
broader community in our increasingly technological and connected society?

If you are interested and will be attending on February 24th, please RSVP
to facultychair-reply at mit.edu. We look forward to hearing your views on
hacking, ethics, responsibility, and community, as well as other issues
raised in the report.

Sincerely,

Shruti Sharma

Chief of Staff, UA
