Residential Support-- A Letter from the UA & DormCon

Dear Undergraduate Community:

A letter from the Chancellor to the Housemasters dated May 29th, 2012 was
recently distributed to a number of the dorm lists. The letter addressed a
planned change in the roles of the support staff in the dormitory—namely,
replacing the five Residential Life Associates (RLAs) with nine Residential
Life Area Directors (RLADs) who would reside in the dormitories they serve.
In the letter, the RLADs were cited with responsibilities for “management
of the GRTs,” for “student-related issues such as advising, student
government, and student support,” along with coordination with the house
managers and Housemasters. The relevant hiring processes were expected to
occur “over the summer.”

As your student representatives, we are writing to assure you that we have
reached out to the Chancellor regarding student involvement on this issue.
As we hear more about opportunities to provide feedback, we will update you
about the ways you can become part of the process.

In the meantime, we encourage you to think critically about the most
important elements of a strong residential support system—what aspects of
the current system could be improved, and in what ways?

To facilitate a broad campus discussion on students’ needs, we have
launched an idea bank on the UA Website (http://ua.mit.edu) designed to
assist in collecting, promoting, and refining student ideas regarding this
issue. We urge you to contribute, as your feedback will help us
tremendously as we attempt to articulate the student opinion on residential
support in the days and weeks to come. Please help us demonstrate the great
capacity of our community to innovate and tackle some of the Institute’s
most challenging problems by contributing ideas of your own.

In the days and weeks to come, please do not hesitate to be in touch with
your dormitory president, GRTs, and housemasters. Our joint UA / DormCon
team will be listening, too, at residential-support-feedback at mit.edu.
