Dear MIT Students,
The United States' preeminence in science and innovation is no longer
assured in the future.
Consider, for example, that only 4% of American students study engineering,
while in China, that figure is 40%.
Furthermore, the knowledge-based industries in Northern European countries
such as Scandinavia and Finland are advancing faster than our own; and East
Asian powers such as China, Taiwan, and Singapore pose serious threats to
our leadership in nanotechnology and bioinformatics, among other crucial
areas of research and inquiry.
As concerned citizens and MIT students, we hereby propose the creation of a
task force on American science and innovation, which would identify
realistic ways for MIT to ensure America's continued leadership in science
and technology.
We trust that all of you share our concern and commitment. If you would
like to help MIT pioneer this vital effort, please contact us by no later
than 5pm on Thursday, October 20, 2005.
America's future in science and technology depends on what we do now.
Sincerely,
Ali Wyne, <mailto:awyne at mit.edu>awyne at mit.edu (Class of 2008)
