[TCCM] MIT Chapel Baptism

Good morning, Andre,

Blessings on your day!

Thank you for this inquiry. Offering Sacraments to folks who don’t have a direct connection to MIT is possible, with a caveat. I only have authority to celebrate the Sacraments with MIT students, faculty, staff, or alumni. However, a person’s local pastor can grant permission for me to celebrate a Sacrament in our chapel for his parishioner. This is a simple request made to the pastor and happens with good frequency. If fact, we had such a baptism last Sunday.

I understand your niece hasn’t had a chance to make a connection with her local Catholic parish; this isn’t an obstacle. The time of having a child and seeking baptism is a most nature moment to make a connection. Where does your niece live? Given your family’s connection with MIT, I believe a local pastor would be most understanding, happy that your niece wants her baby to be baptized, and grant permission for the baptism to take place in the MIT chapel.

Andre, I hope the above information is helpful. If I can offer any further clarification or assistance, pls let me know.

Blessings and peace,

Fr Michael

“Jesus loves you always, even when you don’t feel worthy.
When not accepted by others, even by yourself sometimes,
He is the one who always accepts you. Only believe, you are precious to Him.
Bring all you are suffering to His feet, only open your heart to be loved by Him as you are.
He will do the rest.” Saint Mother Teresa

Dear Chaplain Fr. Michael Medas, M.S.W.

My name is Andrea Fabre and I graduated from MIT in 2012. I used to go to mass on Sundays and once joined the TCC retreat in Maine.

Two of my 3 sisters went to MIT too and one of them just got married at the Chapel this past November. MIT is a very important part of our lives.

I have a niece from another sister, and since we are Roman Catholic, she wants to baptise the little girl; however, we do not have an official church we go to mass to and I wanted to see if it would be possible to baptise the baby girl at MIT.

I am not sure if you are the person I should contact for this, but if not, could you please direct me to the right person?

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Andrea
