I think that correct technique is how to do something in a 
way that doesn't disturb your partner.  The guy who leads 
you in a way you find too forceful shows incorrect 
technique as far as leads go.  The guy who holds you in a 
way you find nice shows correct technique as far as the 
embrace goes.

If not in a class, where do you learn technique?
