So Gordon learned to speak Spanish.  He did it his way, not your way.   So what's the problem?

P.S.  And I seriously doubt that he didn't speak to anyone before the last 
stage because he lives in FLORIDA!   Which was "discovered" by the 
Spanish, and there are Spanish-speakers all up and down its eastern coast.
