Defensive dancing is a lot like defensive driving:
travel at the same speed as the flow of traffic, don't
weave in and out of lanes, and be aware of who are
around you. It is important to learn how to do turns.
Turns make it possible for you to see who are around
you. Thus you can avoid people who are about to run
into you. If the couple in front of you has stopped
advancing, turns make it possible for you to continue
dancing while staying in one spot.
