For the Arts-oriented (and for the tango-oriented too):

Sunday's Feb. 4th New York "TImes" Arts & Leisure section, page 25,
has an article on Miami's new Arts Center that briefly mentions
tango. Tango "bands" were part of the opening day celebration on the
outdoor plaza. The Cleveland Orchestra initiated Philharmonic Hall
with Argentina's Osvaldo Golijov's "Last Round" as the first
selection on the program, and also included Alberto Ginastera's
"Variaciones Concertantes."
From the article: "As a gesture to Miami's large Spanish-speaking
population, the orchestra's music director, Franz Welser-Most, began
the program with works by Argentine composers.
Mr. Golijov's "Last Round" takes the sound of a tango played on the
accordionlike bandoneón and reconceives it for a bustling string
orchestra heavily fortified with basses. Ginastera's spunky 1953
"Variaciones Concertantes" incorporates evocations of Argentine folk
music into a lean, rigorous and harmonically astringent 20-minute
piece." Golijov has also had his "Pasion Según San Marcos" performed
there, because
"Drawing in Spanish-speaking residents in South Florida has been a
defining mission of the Carnival Center from its inception."
Perhaps Piazolla's "Maria de Buenos Aires" has a chance in the
future? It would be great to see a fully staged version performed
some day, and Miami has a large pool of skilled tango dancers to draw
upon for the cast.
