Hi June
I have some theories about non US participants this time 2006 , some of them , for what they could be useful or not
1) More than 80% of people registered into the tournament were young people (> 35 ). This was commented by local newspapers , and Clarin local newspaper made a special article about this question of age as compared with previous editions of this tournament.
2) There is nothing like a previous arrangement , you came to this tournament on your own , at your own risk, the organization just take your registration and tell you when you have to contest .There were no organized assistance for no spanish speaking assistant, more than the individual effort of the persons within the organization to give a hand.
The invisible motto of this festival is "You know where we are , help yourself and be smart to arrive" .
If you compared this organization with the organization of Daniel Rofman World Tango Festival ( with Aurora Lubiz and Jorge Firpo as hosts in the last edition), differences arise inmediately.
Of course, for the world tango festival you have to book in advance , pay the fees, etc.etc.. but once you pay, the organization takes care of you.
This world festival still lacks and organization abroad .The embassies made some help with promotion and assistance, but do not put money in the event.
3) There were some dancing classifications abroad, made by a company ,. TCS, which has been appointed as the official company by the local town hall of buenos aires to carry on the activities of organization of selections in those places that ask for that . The organizer of the local tango community has to pay u$s 3.000 to this company for fees, and sending of judges , that has to be lodged, feed, etc.. etc.. For the winners of the local contests abroad, there are no payment of any fee or reimbursement, so , once again, you are travelling on your own , two plane tickes, one week in Buenos Aires ... all in all it must be around u$s 4.000 or u$s. 5.000 expenses, to receive a prize of u$s 1.650 ..... it does not look quite tempting, doesnt it ......
4) You may ask Mr Robert Duvall for extra reasons, he was sitting at the first row of the finals , watching all the couples intensevely. Being Mr Duvall appointed a Fellow of the Academia Nacional del Tango, and Tango Ambassador to USA, well, maybe he knows a bit more of the reasons for this show off for american people in this contest.
Maybe there are too many contests, and it is not so interesting to come , or maybe people in USA have their own contests within the country , that can be more practical to assist .
There is also the fact of security, local rentals of properties for tourists have a severe drop this past months, due to the problems in security at airports. Specially after the aborted plan in London airports, the comment around here in Buenos Aires was about a sudden flow of cancellations of reservations for rental in properties ,. a 12 hours flight from USA to Argentina seems to be a potential target , and although controls are reinforced , security here is not yet a 100% safe at airports.
Well, hope that for 2007 this will change :)
warm regards
alberto

I notice the absence of participants from USA. I found this curious. Could
anyone offer any ideas why no one from the US participated?
