2:00-3:00PM  - Candombe - This is a very educational workshop steeped in contextual information about some of the past and present roots of tango.

3:15- 4:15 PM -  Milonga Candombera - Add spice to your Milonga steps.

4:30- 5:30 PM - Tango Canyenguero - Add spice to your tango by adding some canyengue elements.  

7:30PM - EVENING - Milonga (Party) with later Performance by Ernest and Maricela.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON
ERNEST WILLIAMS AND MARICELA WILSON

Ernest Williams first discovered Tango in 2000 in Monterey, CA, with Argentina's Fernando Filipelli as his Instructor. While living in Hawaii in 2002 Ernest began teaching tango formally at the request of fellow dancers.

Since 2003 Ernest has traveled nationally and internationally gathering a wealth of knowledge and experience in the world of dance from various sources. He has conducted workshops, seminars and/or dance exhibitions across the country in cities such as Richmond, VA, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh-Durham, N.C, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Nashville, St. Louis, Cleveland, Wichita, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago Albuquerque, San Francisco and Honolulu. He has also taught several intensive tango and milonga seminars in Montevideo, Uruguay and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Some of his most notable US performances include the musical Candombe: Tango Negro with choreographer Carina Losano and the famous Candombe group Cuareim1080 at the Gala Theatre in Washington, DC.

During a sojourn to the Rio de la Plata region of South America, he was a three-time featured tango performer on "La Ciudad de Tango", a live national TV show in Uruguay and a two-time featured candombe dancer with the high-profile Candombe organization La Gozadera in Montevideo. He has also given special exhibitions in milonga con traspie and salsa at the famous milonga/tangueria Viejo Correo in Buenos Aires.

A graduate of the "Master para Maestros" program at La Escuela Argentina del Tango in Buenos Aires, Ernest's teaching style is clear and detailed, and his profound knowledge of the many forms of Tango make him an ideal instructor for both the beginner and the advanced tanguero.

Maricela Wilson has trained in dance forms as divergent as hip hop, ballet, tap, jazz, modern interpretive, African folkloric, salsa, mambo and cha cha. Her first love and expertise is in Salsa, Mambo and Cha Cha. She has recently become a tanguera under the tutelage of Ernest and is now his partner in their many appearances at Tango events around the country. Her teaching philosophy is to have fun first and foremost but also to give her students a strong foundation along with the latest cutting edge moves and concepts.

Together Ernest and Maricela represent the future of tango while respecting the past. They are playful and youthful with their dance. They believe in knowing the rules before breaking them and that anyone can learn from anyone else, thus they are always seeking knowledge and inspiration from all walks of life.

They are an exciting new couple on the national scene with something truly different to offer, so come check them out.

INFORMATION FROM ERNEST ON THESE DANCES WHICH MAY BE "NEW" TO US IN SE IOWA
CANYENGUE
Canyengue is the offspring of milonga and the precursor to the tango as we know it. It was how people danced tango in the first couple of decades of the 20th century. It has hands lowered and bent knees. It was danced to early tango orchestras like Francisco Canaro and Roberto Firpo and can be danced to newer groups like Tubatango.  It's fun, relevant to music we often hear at milongas, and it's enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

CANDOMBE
Candombe is an Afro Uruguayan drum and dance tradition that is the father of the milonga (habanera/son would be the mother). It gives much of the footwork, body movements and rhythm of milonga. It was  originally, (and still is) danced by the blacks of the Rio de la Plata  region of Uruguay and Argentina. It is now enjoyed by the blacks and whites of the region, but primarily in Uruguay.

MILONGA CANDOMBERA
Milonga Candombera is a more recent reconstruction of a fusion of the  milonga and the candombe which is reminiscent of the times when candombe and habanera/son were giving birth to the milonga as a dance  (from the year 1860 to 1880). The most famous dancers of this style are Facundo and Kely Posadas.
