Greetings Tang:
As we continue to transition to normal programming, we have to face
the new economic reality of inflation. The cost of programming has
increased, so Tang Hall is proposing to catch up with the funding practices
of the other graduate residence halls at MIT, and levy a slightly increased
monthly house tax while maintaining Tang’s position as one of the
lowest-taxed graduate housing options. Other graduate dorms already have a
monthly house tax ranging from $5 to $10; now *Tang Hall is considering a
slight increase from $3 to $5 to begin next fiscal year*. This increase
in house tax, roughly the equivalent of a Dunkin Donut coffee a
month, will allow us to host more events with food and enhance common
spaces. Below are some examples of how tax dollars were used and how
an increase will help:
- *More social events with food, larger scale (50+ attendance during
warmer months), better variety of healthier food (authentic cuisine from
different cultures), and better equipment (Karaoke with DJ lighting) *
- *More variety of gym equipment (squat rack & rowing machine) and
entertainment equipment (drum kit) *
- *More borrowable shared supplies (air mattresses, racquets, and board
games) *
- *Better decoration of Tang's interiors/lawns *
Note that all of our accounts are available to residents, and we will
continue to be responsive in resolving any inefficiencies in our spending
through surveys and discussions with Tang residents.
In order to implement this change in house tax, the community must* vote
on this proposal (yes/no) by clicking here* to access the ballot (
https://forms.gle/szQxRgLDmB6cdEez9), which will be available from *March
16 to March 31*. Make sure your voices are heard!
Thank you,
THRA and the Heads of House
