Updated fire alarm schedule.

Dear Residents,

Housing & Residential Services (HRS) will be conducting the required spring semester fire drill in all MIT residences. These drills are conducted to test the system for accuracy, and for residents to familiarize themselves with the building evacuation procedure.

The fire drill for Tang Hall is scheduled to take place on Tuesday May 6th between 6:00 pm and 7:30pm<x-apple-data-detectors://23>. The drill will take approximately 30 minutes from start to finish for each building and the evacuation procedure lasts an average of six minutes. If there is inclement weather, the fire drill will be rescheduled to an alternative date and information about rescheduling will be shared with you.

Please remember that whenever the alarm sounds, ALL residents are required to exit the building.

Please familiarize yourself with the following procedure when evacuating the building:

Fire Evacuation Procedure (adapted for COVID-19 pandemic)

  1. Select the nearest exit
  2. Please wear your face covering (everyone)
  3. Do not take the elevator
  4. Activate the manual fire alarm if not already sounding
  5. Travel along the right-hand side of corridors and stairwells
  6. If you were unable to grab a mask, turn away from others passing to limit exposure.
  7. If possible, direct yourself to the designated assembly locations* for your building (indoor or outdoor), and away from fire lanes. If the space is too crowded, please move away and maintain at least 6 feet from other residents.
  8. As others begin to gather, please observe six feet (two meters) physical distancing.
  9. Do not stand in front of the building entrance. Firefighters require easy access to the building.
  10. If there is inclement weather, take shelter in nearby buildings wherever possible and maintain proper distance.
  11. Once the Cambridge Fire Department or Housing staff gives the ‘all clear,’ you may return to your room, while continuing to keep six feet away from other residents.

*Assembly locations are reported on the Emergency Evacuation Plan posted on each floor next to elevators and stairs.

As important as these measures are to prevent the spread of the virus, keep in mind the need to stay safe from fire, and how to react while following the COVID-19 protocols.
For Tang Hall, your designated assembly area is towards memorial drive.

It is important to note that MIT and the City of Cambridge will never schedule a fire drill late at night. All alarms should be considered real at any time of the day and it is important to follow all instructions regarding fire alarms and building evacuation.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Michael
