A tropical storm watch is now in effect through Wednesday morning

The national hurricane center has issued a tropical storm watch for southern New England, which means they are concerned about sustained tropical storm force winds occurring in the area within the next 48 hours. A tropical storm is a storm that has the ability to produce sustained winds of 40 mph with higher gusts. Based upon the current structure of the storm which is now east of Jacksonville, FL and inland path from the Carolinas late today through central New England tomorrow night, we do not foresee sustained winds in our area reaching 40 mph. There could be some wind gusts over 40 mph in isolated thunderstorms late tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night but sustained winds of 40 mph or higher are not likely in our area based upon our current projections.

The storm which remains very disorganized on both satellite and radar this morning as it continues to pull dry air off both Florida and Georgia this morning. It is forecast to track into eastern South Carolina by 9 pm this evening. It should then track to just southeast of Philadelphia tomorrow afternoon and to near Mt. Washington by early Wednesday morning. This will put us on the dry side of the storm and rainfall amounts right now look like they will end up last than ½ an inch in most areas. The system is forecast to have its main impact on our weather tomorrow night with scattered showers and thunderstorms and breezy conditions but again the heaviest rainfall should be west of the storm's track across eastern NY and VT.

We will continue to monitor the system and update our forecasts if needed.

Forecast updated at 9:00 am
