Hello Tang Residents:
Hope you are having a great new semester and are enjoying your stay in
Tang. We have been working hard to create a comfortable space for you to
return to at the end of the day but we can't maintain it without your help
and cooperation, so we'd like to highlight a few things that tend to keep
the community harmonious.
Below are some rules and policies which apply to living in Tang. I request
you all to spare some time reading them. I have also attached a handy cheat
sheet highlighting all the main points.
1. Fire Alarm
If you burn food in your apartment, please do not open the main door or you
will set off the fire alarm for the entire building. Open your windows
instead and use the exhaust fan above your stove to draw out the smoke.
2. No Smoking Residence Hall
Tang is a no-smoking place. This rule applies even in winters and during
inclement weather. If you want to smoke, please go out and smoke, 25' away
from the building. Smoking closer to the building causes the smoke to enter
the apartments on the lower floors, causing irritation to the residents
there. Take caution to properly extinguish butts and throw them in the
trash bin. Please properly expose of your cigarette butts and make sure
they are *completely extinguished* before discarding them in the garbage
outside and not on the ground or in the grass.
3. Drinking
Drinking is prohibited in all public areas of the dorm (e.g. lounges).
4. Silent Hours
Silent hours are from 11 pm - 7 am on working days and 1 am - 7 am on
holidays. Please respect these hours and in general always keep the noise
level down in your apartments. Also remember walls are thin and many of
your common spaces share walls with your neighbors' bedrooms.
5. Trash, Composting and Recycling procedures
There are trash disposal chutes across from E and F apartments on each
floor. Use them to dispose trash. Please don't throw large cardboard boxes
in the chutes. For all recyclables, there are blue colored recycle bins at
the rear entrance of Tang. We also have a composting bin to the right of
the Tang rear entrance (as you go out). Composting bags can be procured
from the recycling chair (qfbao at mit.edu) or from the bag disposer next to
the composting bin.
6. Keys
Always keep your keys with you and your front door locked. If you are
locked out, you can get a spare key from the front desk (before 10 pm) by
showing your MIT ID. For keys during after hours, call (617-253-1500).
7. Lounges
It is forbidden to take chairs, tables and other furniture out of the
lounges for any reason. The maximum number of people allowed in the 24th
floor lounge at any time is about 40-50.
8. Gym
Please respect the gym rules posted on the gym door. Always return all
weights and other equipment to their racks after use. It is forbidden to
carry equipment out of the gym. Turn off lights if you are the last one to
leave the gym and always show courtesy to fellow gym users. For access to
the gym please fill the gym waiver form (on the Tang website or contact the
IT chair at shelard at mit.edu) and hand it over to the housemanager.
9. Laundry
Laundry machines can be activated using techcash. In the rare event of the
techcash machine not working, keep quarters handy. The machines undergo
weekly maintenance but due to high usage, they may need repair. To view
machine usage and to report an inoperable washer or dryer please visit:
http://laundryview.com/laundry_room.php?lr=1364810
10. Repairs
For repairs in your apartment or the common areas, please file a request at
atlas.mit.edu under Service Requests.
11. Suggestion boxes
You may put any suggestions for the improvement of Tang into the suggestion
boxes installed in the laundry room and the gym.
Have a great stay at Tang.
