Telephone Services in Residence Halls


As many MIT residents have personal cell phones, the MIT Information Services and Technology Department is working with Residential Life & Dining this summer to remove landline telephones from all on-campus residence hall bedrooms.
IS&T has multiple initiatives that they are working on, as alternatives to landline bedroom telephones:


1)      New analog wall telephones have been installed in all residential buildings.  These wall phones are strategically located in the corridors to be used for emergencies.  Each wall phone is able to call within the (617) area code, as well as for emergency assistance, if needed. IS&T, Campus Police and Housing have all approved signage that will be installed over each telephone that includes emergency instructions.

2)      Internal cellular antennas are being installed in all on-campus buildings to improve cellular coverage within our residences. This will be a 3-year project and phase 1 is just coming on-line.  Residence halls are part of phase 2 and installation will begin in June of 2012.

3)      All House Manager, GRT, and RLA spaces will continue to have analog or if possible VoIP telephones.

The undergraduate residence hallway wall telephone installation is now complete.  The goal is to remove the telephones and disable the jacks in all undergraduate rooms by early July, 2012.

The graduate residence hallway wall telephone installation is currently underway.  Expected completion is set for August 3, 2012.  The goal is to remove the telephones from all graduate bedrooms at the end of the graduate license agreement and disable the jacks just after  August 15, 2012.
