Dear Residents,

For those of you who were present in the dorm today, you have just
experienced a fire evacuation in Tang Hall. In the future, if you hear a
similar alarm (no matter what the time is), please use to stairs to exit the
building immediately. One can never be sure if it is a real fire or just a
false alarm. Also, once outside, please congregate away from the building,
preferably near the tennis courts. This gives the fire fighters ample space
to enter the building and ensures you are out of harm's way in case there
are falling debris.

Fire alarms in September are a common occurrence across campus, in part due
to the unfamiliarity of new residents with the sensitivity of the smoke
detectors in the corridors outside the apartments. Believe it or not but one
of the most common acts leading to fire alarms sounding off is burning food
while cooking. It is very instinctive for us to open our doors or windows
when we burn our food and this will raise an alarm. To avoid this, please
use the exhaust fans above your cooking ranges. Do not open the doors if you
burn food as this will needlessly trigger the alarms. If you suspect that
your exhausts are not functioning properly, use the link below to request a
facilities check up.

http://web.mit.edu/sapweb/PS1/index.shtml (select the Building Repairs >
Residence Halls option and complete the form as directed. They will attend
to your request within a day).

Cheers,
Vikram
