Dear Tang residents,

We're in the midst of a battle – one waged for the sake of resource
conservation, determined by sheer recycling prowess, and all about ego:
Recyclemania! A 10-week international recycling competition, Recyclemania
is fought college à college, and we, as a part of MIT, are vying for
bragging rights (slash) recognition that we are a recycling powerhouse – but
we only have 6 more weeks to prove it!

What can you do to help? Put everyday recyclables like bottles, cans, paper,
and plastic container in the large blue bins on each floor (but, please no
trash, and make sure whatever you toss is clean, so the whole bin doesn't
get tossed due to contamination). If you have any questions about what you
can and can't recycle, just ask, or check out this very exhaustive link:
http://web.mit.edu/facilities/environmental/reuse.html

The scores for Week 1 just came out – here they are, broken down by
competition category (MIT's in four):

1. *Grand Champion (Judged by recycling rate: How much are we recycling
compared to the total waste we generate?)*
* 28.6% for Week 1*
 Ranking: 72 out of 179 schools

2. *Per Capita Classic (How much paper, cardboard, cans and bottles are we
recycling per person?)*
* 2.39 lbs per person for Week 1*
Ranking: 37 out of 243

3. *Waste Minimization (How much waste, recyclables and trash combined, are
we generating per person? Here, less is more.)*
* 8.28 lbs per person for Week 1
*
Ranking: 120 out of 156

4. *Gorilla Prize (How much, by weight, are we recycling? Big schools have
an obscene advantage in this one.)*
* 50,024 lbs for Week 1
*
Ranking: 26 out of 243

Over all, not terrible, but c'mon. Tang can't take this lying down.
Eventually, data will also come out about how Tang is doing recycling-wise
relative to the other grad dorms, too, so if you've ever wanted to become
more serious about recycling, now's the time.
