NOTICE TO ALL RESIDENTS

>>The City of Cambridge has changed the requirements for emergency drills
>>for the entire city. Effective immediately, all buildings on campus
>>will be required to have an unannounced drill, coordinated and
>>facilitated by the Cambridge Fire Department twice per year. They
>>will schedule the drills at random times of the day or night at their
>>discretion. The fire codes for the State of Massachusetts gives full
>>authority to local fire departments to make these changes in procedure.

>>The Fire Department will be present at all drills and will be monitoring
>>the evacuation procedure in each building. The Fire Department will
>>also randomly test residents during the evacuation by blocking a main
>>egress to assess how the building occupants respond. This test is to
>>show what would happen if a fire blocked an egress route.

>>Massachusetts state law and the MIT Fire safety policy requires all
>>residents to leave a building whenever the alarm sounds. The fire
>>department will be closely monitoring the evacuations to ensure everyone
>>responds accordingly. If residents blatantly ignore alarms, Cambridge
>>Fire will conduct repeat drills at 2AM.

>> Thank you all for your continued attention to the MIT safety procedures.
