[Sci-tech-public] Invitation to the Annual Arthur Miller Lecture in Science and Ethics (Monday October 7)

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The STS Program invites you to the annual Arthur Miller Lecture in Science and Ethics on Monday, October 7th at 4:00 PM, featuring Cass R. Sunstein<https://hls.harvard.edu/faculty/cass-r-sunstein/>, the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard, speaking about his latest book, Campus Free Speech: A Pocket Guide<https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674298781>.

Sunstein offers a case-by-base guide to resolving the free-speech dilemma facing colleges and universities today. The First Amendment prohibits “abridging the freedom of speech,” yet laws against perjury or bribery are still constitutional. Valuing freedom of speech does not stop a university from regulating speech when doing so is necessary for its educational mission. So where is the dividing line? How can we distinguish reasonable restrictions from impermissible infringement?

The event will be held at The Nexus in Hayden Library on October 7th from 4:00-5:30 pm, with a reception to follow in the Courtyard. The STS Program wants to acknowledge that the lecture coincides with the anniversary of the 10/7/2023 attacks, and will hold a moment of silence for all victims of this conflict at the start of the event for this reason.
