This Thursday, 28 April at 4pm, the MIT Mathematics Department will host a panel discussion about the upcoming film, "The Man Who Knew Infinity," about the mathematicians Hardy and Ramanujan, based on the book by MIT professor emeritus Robert Kanigel. The panel will be moderated by HASTS alumnus Slava Gerovitch. More information below.

In anticipation of the April 29 U.S. release of the film
The Man Who Knew Infinity on the relationship between mathematicians
Hardy and Ramanujan, we will hold a discussion open to the general
public about issues raised in the film.  For instance, what does it mean
to do mathematics: can mathematical progress be based on intuition alone,
or must it be corroborated by proof in order to be valued?
How does the mathematical community of the 21st century react to
amateur mathematicians?

Note: This is not a screening of the film, but some short clips will be shown.
