Hello, all,

I am pleased to announce that the Siegel Teaching Prize for 2012 goes to Tom Schilling. The Siegel Teaching Prize was established five years ago to recognize HASTS graduate students who have excelled as instructors of MIT undergraduates. It carries an award of $2500.

In the words of the selection committee:

"We are pleased to award the Siegel Teaching Prize to Tom Schilling. Tom was nominated by Prof. Vincent Lépinay for his work in STS.011 Ethics and Politics in Science and Technology, which seeks to train students in STS terminologies and prepare them for their final projects. In the course, students tend to choose (overly) ambitious projects and, as we know, the course has been a kind of ongoing experiment. That comes with challenges for faculty, let alone TAs.

The testimonies from Prof. Lepinay and the students are unanimous about Tom's immense contributions to the class. He was ever-present for students, always accessible but firm, humorous but demanding of students the pedagogical rigor that comes with preparing students to write papers for an academic audience. Prof. Lepinay praised him 'for the combination of rigor and humor that has accompanied our collaboration and his relations to students.'

Said one student: 'Tom was a great TA... He really helped with concepts that he was comfortable with, and led presentations in a structured (yet interactive) way.' Another wrote that Tom understood 'how to apply course material and encouraged us to use our knowledge effectively.' Yet a third: 'The best TA I've had in a HASS class. Was very involved in our group's project and encouraged us all to dig deeper into the material so we could present as holistic of a project as possible.'

Congratulations, therefore, to Tom, our nominee for the Siegel Prize."

Thanks also to Hanna Rose Shell and Clapperton Mavhunga who sat on the Prize Committee.

Congratulations again to Tom!

best,
Dave
