October 25
Human Wars with Microbes
Roberto Kolter, Professor of Microbiology and Immunobiology, Harvard Medical School




Dr. Roberto Kolter is Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School, where he has been a faculty member since 1983 and Co-Director of Harvard’s University wide Microbial Sciences Initiative since 2003.  Dr. Kolter has been an influential microbiologist for a period that spans four decades.  As a graduate student in the 1970s he studied DNA replication.  At Harvard, he has worked on antibiotic synthesis, bacterial starvation physiology, experimental evolution, bacterial biofilms, and chemical communication in the microbial world.  Dr. Kolter has been involved in science teaching and policy worldwide.  He recently served as the President of the American Society for Microbiology and now serves as Chair of its Public and Scientific Affairs Board.  A native of Guatemala, Dr. Kolter earned his B.S. at Carnegie-Mellon University, his Ph.D. at University of California, San Diego and carried out post-doctoral training at Stanford University.

The Art of Science Television
Paula Apsell, Senior Executive Producer, Nova; Director, WGBH Science Unit 

Paula S. Apsell is the Senior Executive Producer of NOVA, now in its 37th season. Apsell has overseen the production of hundreds of science documentaries, including The Elegant Universe with Brian Greene, Origins and Evolution.

In 2005, Apsell introduced acclaimed spinoff NOVA scienceNOW, hosted by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. NOVA is the most watched science series on American television and the most visited website on PBS.org and has won every major broadcasting award, including the Emmy, the Peabody, and the dupont-Columbia Gold Baton. Apsell has been recognized with numerous individual awards and has served on several boards including the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.

From 6pm to 7pm, there will be a brief reception in the Knight suite with Paula Apsell and several former Knight Fellows.
