As nations consider nuclear power to meet the world's growing energy
appetite, the media play a unique role in shaping public perception of
safety and economics. The unfolding Japan nuclear energy crisis presents a
new challenge to the media, as they struggle to sort through confusing, and
often conflicting, information about damage to the crippled plant and the
threat to public safety. The disaster has reignited the American public
debate about the future of nuclear power at a time when advocates had hoped
for a renaissance of this technology. The Japan accident also provides a
powerful reminder of the 1979 Three Mile Island accident, the worst in
American history.
How much does media coverage influence public acceptance of nuclear power?
How well are the media covering the story?
