*Abstract:* For many decades, the social sciences have carried out extensive
empirical studies of groups’ and individuals’ claims, disputes, and
understandings about “objectivity” and “truth”, most importantly in the
context of science. How is it, however, that people come to understand a
situation as “just,” or as I will argue, more precisely, (in) (in) just. I
investigate how a partnership emerged in Boston in the 1990’s between the
Boston Police Department and a group of inner city ministers known as the
Ten Point Coalition to deal with the problem of youth violence. Central to
the partnership is the development of a set of procedures for dealing with
difficult and complicated situations in a “just” way.
*Biography*: Christopher Winship is the Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology
and a member of the HKS senior faculty.
