MIT150: STS Moments
Dear colleagues and friends of MIT:
Part of celebrating MIT's first 150 years means taking a new look at the
Institute's history in light of the latest research by our faculty. Please
join us on Tuesday, February 15 at 4 pm for MIT's Moments of Decision: An
Historical Retrospective
<http://mit150.mit.edu/events/mit-moments-of-decision> , a panel discussion
with MIT's own historians on how the Institute has reflected and shaped the
history of science and technology in America from the antebellum period,
through the Cold War, and into the 21st century. I will open and moderate
the discussion among our guest panelists, who are:
* Karen Arenson '70 , former MIT Alumni Association president and
education reporter for The New York Times
* Deborah Douglas, Curator for Science and Technology at the MIT
Museum
* John Durant, Director of the MIT Museum
* David Kaiser, Associate Professor in the Program in Science,
Technology, and Society and author of Becoming MIT: Moments of Decision
* Merritt Roe Smith, Cutten Professor of the History of Technology in
the Program in Science, Technology, and Society
President Susan Hockfield will offer closing remarks.
This event is presented jointly by the Program in Science, Technology, and
Society <http://web.mit.edu/sts/> and the MIT150 program
<http://mit150.mit.edu/> , and it takes place on the sixth floor of the
Media Lab Complex <http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=E14> , which is 75 Amherst St,
MIT room E14-674. Admission is open to all and the discussion will be
followed by a reception, during which you will have a chance to talk with
the panelists. I hope you will be able to attend.
Sincerely,
David Mindell
Chair, MIT150 Steering Committee
Dibner Professor of the History of Engineering and Manufacturing
and of Aeronautics and Astronautics
