Hello,

I have the pleasure of announcing that Nate Deshmukh Towery has won the Siegel
Teaching Prize recipient for 2010 for exemplary teaching of STS. In the words
of the selection committee, Roz Williams and Sherry Turkle:

"Nate was the TA for a new subject, Energy Decisions, Markets & Policies
(21A.341J), which was joint-listed among four departments - courses 21A, 11, 14
and 15. Two of the three professors for the class, Susan Silbey (Anthropology)
and Richard Schmalensee (Sloan) submitted glowing nominations of Nate's work
with the class. Professor Silbey was greatly appreciative of his preparatory
research and organization of course materials. She writes, "I have never had a
more able TA willing to take on more and more of the responsibility and
accomplish the tasks with as much integrity and intelligence." She also
comments that the students were impressed by and appreciative of Nate's ability
to provide connective threads in class combining multiple disciplines and topics
as well as three professors.

Professor Schmalensee also praises Nate's excellent relationship with the
students, in part through his creativity in structuring recitation sections.
He adds, "I have never had a better TA in all my years teaching, and I would be
surprised (though delighted for my HASTS colleagues!) if there’s a better one
nominated for this Prize." For his extraordinary work in a complicated
situation, we are delighted to award Nate the fourth annual Siegel Prize for
outstanding service as a TA among HASTS graduate students."

Please join me in congratulating Nate on this award, and on his exemplary
teaching and accomplishment. The Siegel prize also comes with a $2,500 cash
award. Many thanks to Sherry and Roz for their work on the selection committee.

best,

d
