Mathematics, Logic, and the Structure of the Universe in Victorian England
The relationship between mathematics and the external world has been
interpreted in very different ways in different times. In this talk I
will examine the relationships that Augustus De Morgan claimed between
mathematical and logical symbols and the ultimate nature of the
universe. I will use De Morgan's particular story as an entry point into
a view of the world that supported the development of a great deal of
the mathematics and physics in Victorian England.
