"Telling Their Stories:

DNA Technology and the

Identification of Srebrenica's Missing."

Sarah Wagner, Harvard University

TODAY!! Monday, January 22 @ 11:30 am

MIT Building 16, Room 220

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, the phrase "missing person" signals both the
disturbing sight of unmarked graves and a crisis of knowledge about victims'
death and burial. For one group of missing persons, the victims of the July
1995 genocide at the UN "safe area" of Srebrenica, the circumstances of
their absence have compelled an innovation in forensic technology-the
DNA-based identification system now used to recognize mortal remains of
massive numbers of victims of political and natural disasters far beyond
Bosnia. How did Bosnia come to develop such a "world class" technology, and
what has this technology meant for the surviving families, post-war Bosnian
society, and the international community so heavily invested in the region?
A focus on the broader social uptake of this scientific innovation reveals
its potential for both reconstituting social individuals and deepening
communal divisions.
