Tuesday, September 26
STS Brown Bag Lunch Talk by Pru Hobson West
  'Ethics and Extremism': The Use of Animals in Scientific Research
12:30-2:30 pm, MIT, E51-191

Pru Hobson-West graduated from the University of 
Edinburgh with an MA in Politics. She joined the 
Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks and 
Society (IGBiS) at the University of Nottingham 
in 2001, where she held a four-year Research 
Training Fellowship. Her doctoral research looked 
at organized parental resistance to childhood 
immunization in the UK. Dr Hobson-West was 
recently awarded a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in 
Biomedical Ethics (2006-2009). The postdoctoral 
Fellowship will be used to investigate the issue of animal experimentation.

The presentation will explore different 
approaches to the animal research controversy and 
provide some background perspective on the UK 
context. It will then review the relevant 
literature and argue that proponents and 
opponents appeal to both scientific and ethical 
discourses to make their claims. Finally, the 
presentation will introduce the empirical project 
which aims to assess how actors draw boundaries between science and ethics.
