Modern Times, Rural Places:
Seminar Series at MIT
"The Building of European Forests: In Search of Turning Points in Forest
History"
Bernd-Stefan Grewe
Assistant Professor of History and Sociology, Director of the Transnational
History Research Group, University of Constance, Germany
Most people in western societies think that forests are nature and
wilderness. But there is no primeval forest left in Central Europe. Even
those woodlands protected as national parks or reserves have been shaped by
human use. For centuries, they had a key function for the economic and
social development of societies. The character of European forests has
changed greatly since 1500. But how to define turning points in forest
history? I will suggest give a broad outline of the political, economic,
social, cultural and ecologic development of European forests since 1500.
Friday, October 21, 2005
2:30 to 4:30 pm
Building E51 Room 095
Sponsored by MITs History Faculty and the Program in Science, Technology,
and Society
