Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies, who joins us from
the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law. Prof. Rittich will be
chairing the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Canada

SAME SEX MARRIAGE
The Problem of Reconciling Legislative Change to Social Reality: a
Canadian Approach

Martin Cauchon, a partner at the Law firm Gowling Lafleur Henderson and
former minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada served as
President of the Liberal Party of Canada (Québec) from 1993 to 1995.
Throughout his distinguished political career, Mr. Cauchon has held many
pivotal cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Economic
Development in Québec, Minister of National Revenue, and Minister of
Justice. Brenda Cossman is a professor of law at the University of
Toronto. Publications include the co-authored Bad Attitudes on Trial:
Pornography, Feminism and the Butler Decision; Subversive Sites:
Feminist Engagements with Law in India, and Secularism's Last Sigh? as
well as numerous articles in these areas. She is co-editor (with Judy
Fudge) Privatization, Law and the Challenge to Feminism. She has written
extensively on the legal regulation of adult personal relationships,
including same sex marriage.

Harry W. Arthurs is University Professor of Law and Political Science
and President Emeritus of York University. He has been Dean of Osgoode
Hall Law School, President of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association,
a member of the Economic Council of Canada, a Bencher of the Law Society
of Upper Canada, Chair of the Council of Ontario Universities, is a
former Killam Fellow, Associate of the Canadian Institute for Advanced
Research and academic visitor at several English and Canadian
universities. He has written extensively on labour law and
administrative law, legal theory and history, the legal profession and
legal education and higher education policy and governance. His book
Without the Law (1985) traced the rise of the administrative state in
19th century England.

THE HON. DAVID MILLER, Mayor of Toronto
The Future of the City

Mayor Miller has a degree in economics from Harvard, a law degree from
the University of Toronto, and he remains a member of the Law Society of
Upper Canada. Before running for public office, he was a partner at the
prominent Toronto law firm Aird & Berlis, where he specialized in
employment and immigration law and shareholder rights.
The Canada Seminar is off the record, free and open to the public, and
chaired by Professor Kerry Rittich, the fall 2004 William Lyon Mackenzie
King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies. The seminars listed above
