The slide rule is the most important technological artifact of the
20th century that has yet to be studied, written about or presented
in any significant manner to a general audience. In the spring
2004, the MIT Museum received one of its most important gifts ever:
the magnificent Keuffel & Esser Company Slide Rule Collection. The
MIT Museum now possesses one of the largest publicly accessible
collections of slide rules and one of two known company collections
in the world.
The preservation and presentation of this collection represents one
of the museum's great opportunities to stimulate interest in
engineering, mathematics and design, as well as the history of
technology and business.
The MIT Museum invites you to participate in a planning workshop for
a new exhibition on slide rules. Two identical workshops (Wed., Dec.
8, noon - 2 pm; Thurs., Dec. 9, 5:30-7:30 pm) will be held in order
to maximize participation. To sign-up or for more details see the
attached flier or contact Debbie Douglas, Curator of Science and
Technology, (ddouglas at mit.edu).
