Unnatural Monopoly: The Political Economy of
American Telegraphy during the Civil War Era

Richard R. John is a professor of history at the University of Illinois at 
Chicago, where he specializes in the history of business, technology, and
communications.  His publications include Spreading the News: The American 
Postal System from Franklin to Morse (Harvard University Press, 1995).
His presentation on Monday, "Unnatural Monopoly:  The Political Economy of 
Western Union in Civil War America" is drawn from his forthcoming
history of American telecommunications, which is tentatively entitled 
"Making Connections:  The Contested Origins of American Telecommunications."
