Deadline Monitoring

I have an approval step with latest end deadline based on 5 days after
workitem created.
In the approval step the manager can send the workitem to another person
to correct.
when the other person corrects the business object it is sent back to
the approving step.
The status of the workitem when first sent to the manager is 'ready'.
When sent back for correction the 
workitem status changes to complete.  The deadline still occurs even
though the step has a completed status.
Is there a reason why the deadline should be activated if the workitem
is in a completed status.
